November 2012

So, my “training” has had sort of a rocky start. I sort of pulled out my hip last week, and took a short break. Here’s to not allowing myself to feel guilty, to remember to stretch, and to go full speed ahead with forward motion. (No pun intended.)

Nutrition Episode

No real need to go into what I ate, simply because I went for a run later in the day rather than conducting my usual (and preferred) morning run routine. I did have a Green Monster with kale, spinach, a pear, and 1 scoop of hemp protein powder (chocolate flavored.) I also baked up some Pumpkin Baked French Toast on Udi’s cinnamon raisin bread, and had two slices of that for lunch plus 1 TBSP of Justin‘s Maple Almond Butter. I had a few squares of espresso dark chocolate, some coffee, blah, who cares.

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

Today, I did something I don’t normally do. I ran with a friend. He was late (tsk) and I had somewhere to be at 5, but we did “interval” running, beginning on Columbia and 14th, running up to 15th, and doing down toward volunteer park. We’re always a chatty pair, and neither of us wanted to clock it, so we tried to stick to a “run three blocks, walk 1.5 blocks” routine, and it sort of worked. I believe we ran to Thomas and 15th, where we ran up to 16th and started heading back, making a quick pit stop at the giant metal slide in front of the hospital 😉

Feelings Episode

I was mostly thinking about how I sounded like a panting dog and probably looked like a weird elephant/penguin combo. He told me I ran like a gazelle which I suppose has a bit more of a graceful connotation. The best part about running with a friend is, you’re distracted by conversation and hardly realize you’re working out at all. Sort of. He told me he was glad to be running with someone because he was motivated by “not wanting to be the lazy one” which I understand but can’t really relate to, I personally have no problem admitting to being lazy….depending on the situation and my current state of being.

Post-Run Nutrition Episode

I had rehearsal immediately after, and got quite hungry about halfway through it, resulting in a rather cranky (and argumentative) Dalyce. Luckily, we got out a bit early and I walked home, then sauteed some broccoli and carrots, heated up my vegan mac&cheese, and chowed down. I even had some amazing chocolate pie before going out for a few beers with a friend.

Nutrition Episode

I had a pretty big breakfast this morning. Tuesdays are late starting for me, and often end up homework/work out/ catch up days, so I had a Green Monster with red kale and a scoop of protein powder, a slice of Udi’s toast with 1 TBSP of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter, and some more chocolate pie. Probably too much chocolate pie…..anyway. At least I started the day by doing about 20 minutes of Pilates, focusing on strenghtening my back and my core. Apparently it revved up my appetite!

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

I did interval running from my house and down to … wow why can’t I ever remember the name of that street. Anyway, it was past Yesler. I tried to stick to yesterday’s “run 3 blocks and walk 1.5 blocks” routine. It more or less worked, and additionally, I did run up a flight of stairs and sprinted home like a champion.

Feelings Episode

I saw a fellow runner and we exchanged shy but knowing runner’s smiles. I vaguely wondered whether or not I was half-assing the workout. I loved every second of being out in the autumn menagerie, as usual.

Post-Run Nutrition Episode

Another Green Monster……only slightly addicted……bananas are a healthy fat, right? Protein is good after a run, plus can’t get enough leafy greens in ❤

Nutrition Episode

I’m pretty sure I had a Green Monster and chocolate oats before I set out on a run, but it was a week ago and memory is foggy.

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

I ran to Volunteer Park from my house. I ran all the way there, and it felt great. About 2.4 miles. I walked back, and made a pit stop at the coop where I picked up some groceries, and trudged back to my house with arms full. I believe it was a beautiful sunny day, and I listened to a mix CD a friend had given me. Great jams, fitting for runs (particularly “That’s How Things Get Done” by Howe Gelb and “Keep On Keepin’ On” by N.F. Porter)

Feelings Episode

I remember feeling exhilarated and surprised to find myself at the park, having run the whole way (that hill from 23-18th on Cherry is mean!) I could feel the progress my body was making, and I focused on running from the core out.

Post-Run Nutrition

I made a chocolate/almond butter shake with some protein powder, and an hour or so later had some chips& salsa with mini vegan quesadillas including daiya “cheddar”, fresh guacamole, and black beans. Super tasty.

Nutrition Episode

I had a Green Monster with protein powder and coffee before rehearsal that morning.

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

Pleased to say I did the full Volunteer Park run! I started at 16th and Cherry, ran to the park, and back. I didn’t quite run all the way back to 16th and Cherry, but I did run to 16th and Madison. The main thing is, I finished the run, and it was great. Was still on the mix CD kick, which provided the tunes once again.

Feelings Episode

As I’ve expressed, I was excited to actually complete the run. I was beginning to get a sense of my limits, and remember that I can and should push myself more than I do.

Post-Run Nutrition

You know, I don’t remember. I’m sure it was savory, and probably involved another protein shake.

Nutrition Episode

I had my usual Green Monster with protein powder and coffee.

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

I don’t really want to call this a run day, because I only ran from my house to campus, about 1.2 miles with that 5 block hill. I ran it quickly, but not quickly enough to call it a “magic mile.” Again, I’m still at the point where I’m testing my limits. Was still listening to the mix CD.

Feelings Episode

I felt like a gazelle. I felt like a rock star. I felt like people on the streets might pin me as a marathon racer. Then reminded myself not to get ahead of myself. Anyway, the biggest thing I noticed was that I went “easy” on myself. I could have ran that so much more quickly, and called it a true workout! My first magic mile. Alas, I didn’t, oh well.

Post-Run Nutrition

“Recovery” wasn’t really necessary because it wasn’t that much of an exertion but my friend took me out to lunch where I got a Greek Salad (hold the feta), a small Indian chickpea soup, and an amazing IPA. Happy Labor Day to me 🙂

Nutrition Episode

Green monster with protein.

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

I guess you could call this my version of a “cross-training” day. I did Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred Level 1 with three-pound weights. I listened to the same playlist I’ve been listening to all week.

Feelings Episode

Something strange happened — I realized that the weights were almost too light. The workout felt almost too easy. The cardio especially was not half as exhausting as I remember it being back in July or August. I vaguely considered whether or not I shouldn’t be doing Level 2…but quickly poofed that thought to dust when I remembered how hellish Level 2 was the one time I tried it out. I thought that maybe I should up my weights to five pounders. At this point, my plan of action is to give Level 2 another try, and see how that feels. If it still feels “hellish”, I’ll ask myself if that’s because it’s challenging and I need to work up to it, or if it’s because it’s simply an unenjoyable workout. If it’s the former, I’ll suck it up and keep going with it. If it’s the latter, I’ll switch back to Level 1 but with five-pound weights. Honestly, I find Level 1 to be fun and enjoyable, and if I stay in Level 1 forever and just keep upping my weights..I’m perfectly fine with that.

Post-Workout Nutrition

I couldn’t tell you. Wait, yes I could. I had some apple pie oatbran. Not what I wanted but I was running late for class and didn’t have time to get more extravagant. I looked forward to dinner that night where I cooked up some caramelized onions, sauteed kale, lentils, quinoa, and roasted sweet potato with cumin and cinnamon 🙂

Nutrition Episode

I started my day with…do I even need to say it? A Green Monster. This one had one scoop of protein powder, 1 TBSP (ish) of Dutch Cocoa Powder, 1 TBSP of Agave Nectar, and a bunch of kale. I drank it in class like a boss and it was tasty 🙂

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

What a run! I started at 16th and Cherry. Did five minutes of 1:1 intervals, strictly timed. That took me to the Coop (16th and Madison.) From here, I set a consistent jogging pace toward the park. Once I got to….either Republican or Mercer, or somewhere between the two, I started doing more 1:1 intervals. Found my way to the water tower, ran up the water tower. Took a breather at the top

.

I took a little stroll through the park, then set off from Ward and 15th and fell back into a jogging pace, which I maintained all the way back to the coop. I sprinted from Howell to Olive and finished the run like a champion. Perfection.

Feelings Episode

I really pushed myself today. I think that I challenged my body in that I put it through a variety of paces, and made it think on its toes. Not that there’s some weird dichotomy between me and my body– There isn’t. I’m trying to remember that. Anyway, there were times when I wanted to stop, I even considered only walking back from the park, but I didn’t. Running up the water tower was especially exerting. But I kept going. I pushed myself through, and almost got to that point where I wasn’t even aware that I was running. Sprinting to the finish line is always a good feeling, and I haven’t been incorporating that factor into enough of my runs. Good day.

Post-Run Nutrition

Today is payday, which means I got to enjoy me some raw Coconut Water (I got a pink one!) I also enjoyed small portions of some Dahl lentils, some tofu “egg salad”, and this amazing kale salad — mine included broccoli, carrots, radishes, raisins, quinoa, lentils, and flax seed, and subbed the maple for agave. Because agave is sadly cheaper….I even had one dark chocolate peanut butter cup by Justin’s 🙂 Yummy, savory, energy replenishing, nourishing. Glowing 🙂

Nutrition Episode

Today was an afternoon run, so I’d taken in a Green Monster and coffee for breakfast (this one with some hazelnut butter and kale) and a vegan BLT from Honey Hole for lunch.

(this one is actually yesterday’s Green Monster but it was so good that I thought it deserved a picture.)

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

I did a solid run to Volunteer park, up the water tower, and back. Started and ended at the Coop (about 16th and Olive.) Approximately 4 miles total, not bad, not bad at all. Listened to Graduation by Kanye West, which I always find to be motivating and uplifting.

Feelings Episode

My leg was sort of bothering me. I wanted to do intervals, but the sprinting was not happening. Running up the water tower was, once again, “intense.” It was raining, and cold, but the running warmed me right up. Honestly, felt strong throughout the entire run, other than my leg (sort of) bothering me and not counting my dying dog-like pant attack upon reaching the top of the water tower (apparently disturbing some cute couple trying to enjoy the view.)

The run was abound with other runners! That’s always a good sight to see. And looking down through the bars, glimpsing pockets of the world’s happenings….Sprinted my way home from Howell to Olive, a bit past Olive actually, and yes I felt like a warrior woman.

Post-Run Nutrition Episode

I can’t find my wallet, which sucks. I was smart enough to bring some quarters from my Europe savings jar (sadly) and got me a peanut butter pretzel Mojo bar, some dried mangos, and some dark chocolate from Trader Joe’s. Fueled up at my place of work.

Nutrition Episode

Started the day with some coffee and a Green Monster, this one containing 1 scoop of Spiru-Tein Protein Powder (strawberry flavor), some spinach, and one Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Ball. Near perfection.

Workout, Route, and Music Episode

Today, I braved out the monster I believed to be the 30 Day Shred Level 2, and was pleasantly surprised. Not only was the workout far from “monstrous”, it was actually rather enjoyable, and just the right degree of challenging. I did the half burpees in near perfect form (I think/hope), and the only strength move I really struggled with was the perma-squat plus v-lifts (I totally made that name up but whatever. If you’re familiar with Jillian Michaels, maybe you know what I’m talking about.) The only “ab” move I really struggled with were the plank twists at the end! And that was mostly because I was sort of “planked” out. I still get “planked” out rather easily, working on that.

Feelings Episode

I sort of already covered that.

Post-Workout Nutrition Episode

I was running late for class, as usual, so just heated up some brown rice, black beans, and some cheddar daiya “cheese” with Cholula. Beans and rice are always a good tide over for me.

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

I ran for about 22 minutes — I ran the whole time, and I included four flights of stairs on my run. I don’t feel like writing more than that 🙂

Friday, November 23, 2012

I went for a run with my house mate. She’s at a different place than me, running wise, so the pacing was sort of awkward. Not to mention, it was pouring rain outside so it resembled frolicking at the old Las Vegas Wet n Wild minus the nasty smell of urine and chlorine, plus the smell of damp wood and mud 🙂 Anyway, we didn’t run as far or for as long as I’d have liked, though I think I managed to get about 15 minutes of solid running in (there were a few minutes spent doing butt kicks in place while waiting for her to catch up, I don’t mean for that to sound snobby or show offy, I just take my running seriously!)

We went back to our place and did about half an hour of yoga– she showed me up there, with her awesome flexibility and balance. I forgot how much I actually enjoy yoga, and how beneficial it actually is for me.

Saturday, November 24, 2012

I did the 30DS Level 1 with 5 pound weights.

Sunday, November 25, 2012

I extended my peripheral today, and included hills in my run. I’ve been, up to this point, afraid of hills. I don’t think one can call oneself a Seattle runner and simultaneously fear hills! I ran for about 26 minutes. The route included these stairs, and more like it 🙂

Monday, November 26, 2012

Today, I ran with a friend. It was a breezy, social jog. To Volunteer Park and up the water tower. Talked about speciality and family dynamics. Among other things both grand and frivolous. About 2.4 miles. Would (and cardiovascularly speaking, could) have ran back but not for my torn, worn, and screaming muscles and limbs. Contemplating hours of yoga, stretching, sleeping, and oily baths. Feeling heart healthy and full of endurance, but lacking in good form, strength, and flexibility. Did lift some weights, I normally have to force myself to do this. Thoroughly enjoying this process either way.
